Graduate Maturity WorkshopThere are unique challenges that confront those who work in a profession. Only those who have experienced it know what it is like. The constant workload that never ends makes it feel like you are running a marathon without a finish line. The client pressure and demands are ever increasing. Your best work is unnoticed and a simple error can mean significant fallout.
The truth of what it is actually like to be a professional - accountant, engineer, solicitor for example - often comes as a shock to graduates. The reality is often is very different from expectations. The consequence is that it can take up to two years for a young graduate to find their feet and become a genuine contributor. This means the firm is investing in the graduate for two years before they are productive in their own right. Often by then the graduate, believing the grass must be greener elsewhere, decides to shift employers. You lose talent that you have taken 2 years to develop and the graduate finds that whatever the colour of the grass; they still need to mow it. Graduates face a very steep learning curve. For example, how does a young professional tell/ask a 15 year veteran member of the support staff how to prepare a piece of work? They struggle for respect, can feel like an impostor (have the word solicitor under their name but feel they don't fit that title), have workload pressure they are not used to, marketing pressure and an expectation they'll be offered a partnership within a year or two. This programme has been specifically designed to help this group of people get on top of their role. It is a single day program with a 1/2 day follow up session approximately 4 weeks after the workshop. The Graduate Maturity Programme provides you and your graduate with the following outcomes:
It really is a maturity programme - it provides skills and lessons that seasoned professionals all learned the hard way. You can of course let them follow that path as well; provided you are prepared to wait that long. This program vastly accelerates that learning process, getting your graduates autonomous and productive sooner. As a result of the workshop you will notice your graduates are more resilient more relaxed and confident about their place in your company, more able to prioritise workflow and deal with each matter and client demand on its merits. This programme is ideal for Graduates who have between 6 and 24 months experience. Those with more experience will also benefit. Your graduate will come away with some genuine easy to use strategies for managing stress and improved personal leadership. The Graduate Maturity Workshop a great way to demonstrate your commitment to them and to help them get to grips with their role. Workshop ContentThe knowledge economy - What does it mean to be a professional?
The learning brain You will learn the brain processes that sit behind the way you form thoughts, work habits, interpret events and learn. You will learn that you have more control than you think about the way you think. Stress and Fatigue You will learn to identify the background stress that is typical with a working professional and the effects of this on fatigue and how to deal with it. Managing Emotion You will learn how to manage your emotion to be a more mature contributor and take ownership of your professional development. You are smart enough to get into the profession, so learn how to make that work so that you become the cooperative contributor that is most valued by the firm. See description below. Time and Priority Management Learn skills to manage your workload. Understand the myth of multitasking and learn how to recognise the difference between that which is important and that which is simply urgent and then choose where to direct your energy. Manage EmotionLearn simple techniques to reduce and manage your stress. If there was one word to describe the nature of the stress experienced with work in the professions it is 'constant'. The workload in the intray will always feel bigger than you can finish. The weeks roll around and before you know it your monthly review is on again and you don't feel like anything has changed.
This ongoing and persistent type of stress is very fatigueing and not suited to the way our nervous system has evolved. Our natural stress responses (think 'fight or flight') are not suited to this type of pressure. It is not that the amount of pressure is overwhelming - it is that it is constant. You get fatigued and you don't get a chance to recover; unless you learn some coping techniques. One traditional coping technique is to self medicate (i.e. with red wine). For example, alcoholism rates in the legal profession are between 15% and 24% (2 to 3 times the national avarage). Dulling the stress with alcohol or other drugs, never really having a weekend because of the inability to 'switch off' from work leads to fatigue, mistakes, anxiety, and even depression. It is possible to help people avoid or minimise the effects of these pressures through the implementation of simple techniques to help you maintain control of your emotions. You remain human, you learn and get through your work. You will learn about the powerful influence that thoughts have on your emotion and how you can ensure you stay sharp and effective. Commit to your futureYou could wait a couple of years to grow into the role and work out what it really means to become a professionals and in doing so develop a range of habits that may or may not serve you well for the rest of your career. Or, you could take one day out and learn some powerful and simple techniques to stay on top of your personal and professional development.
